It’d been three weeks. Amaranth was already up and walking around the capital. His feet wandered aimless, and yet his feet brought him here.

Dusk was coming. The planetarium looming overhead bled into an array of pinks and purples. Artificial constellations sparkled subtly, even though city lights hummed abundantly. Before this young fellow – standing lax and stout, still and unmoving – were buildings upon buildings which crowds of the nighttime rush hour walked by.

The one building that stood out was none other than the home of this one’s sacrifice. It was three weeks ago when he’d called for… assistance. But as “fate” or something stupid would have it, they didn’t meet. “…” A part of him wanted to see… and another part of him didn’t want to see.

The latter won. The stocky fellow took the first step away.

Three weeks.

Time was irrelevant to most, but to a particular leader nothing could be more significant. Xander found the time to be annoying and frustrating. It signified something he wanted to know, but something that had slipped past his fingers yet again. It had been four years since his sacrifice had upped and left - he had tried at first but eventually it was no use to chase something that did not want to be found.

So he had done about everything in his power to figure why he had been called on Vale's phone of all things but had heard Ranth's voice. It had... worried the sacrifice since he hadn't heard from Ranth in such a long time. Something was wrong Yet when he had gone he was turn away neither sibling was there and Xander had a precious engagement that he had to be: just like tonight.

So the rather tall, muscular man found himself leaving his place of residence and readying himself to step into the cooler air. His blue orbs however caught sight of a form that he didn't think he would see again. Suddenly all thoughts of worrying about the cold vanished as he was in a rush moving to open the door and go outside.

"Amaranth." his voice was husky and a little bit confused almost. "You must of come here on purpose but you planned on walking away again without even saying anything didn't you?" despite it being a question it seemed obvious the older knew the answer.

Zing––instantly, a bolt of lightning zapped through Amaranth’s core. Ears perked up, tail followed, and shoulders stiffened. He’d been caught. Features relaxed. Mind raced.

It almost felt like getting trouble. This was not just any person, not just any councilman, but the full moon. One misstep, one wrong word… and Ranth would have to kiss a lot of things good-bye.

The answer was obvious. Though it was good to hear that voice again – no, it wasn’t good to hear – Amaranth answered by continuing his departure. He had neither turned around no acknowledged “Xan” in any way.

The reaction that came from the smaller was honestly not one he expected. He could see the reaction in his ears, tail - and the stiffness that moved across his body. Xan resisted saying anything on it - it was one of the few ways that he had been able to track his fighter's reactions when they had been together for such a short time. In the end it also meant that what he had said had absolutely been true, Amaranth did not expect to be found.

Just as soon as it was there it was suddenly gone however - and Xander actually managed to sigh. Not one word, not a single one was uttered from the other as he only paused a moment before he began to walk again. Perhaps if he was someone else he would have gone after him after things had happened - he had tried but things had ended terribly between them.

His arms where proof enough of that and he couldn't help but feel his own tingling sensation just from being near him again. After a moment however, he decided he was not going to let him run again. Before the other could get to far the bulkier man moved quickly reaching and if quick enough would try to grab him by his arm, his grip firm till the other faced him at the very least.

"Do. Not. Run." the words came tense, almost annoyed. He could take a lot of things but he could not take the other turning his back on him again. "Where have you been? And what happened.. I deserve an answer considering it was you that called me." he said. He wouldn't let it go not this easily. It wasn't for Amaranth that he fought, but perhaps deep inside him somewhere he needed the closeness at least for as long as possible.

This person – the Bulwark sacrifice – wasn’t just any nuisance claiming lay to the land. This person was Alexander Levi, councilman of Law: the full moon. Xan was something of the “king of kings.” He was dangerous, not to be trusted. He enforced the capital’s laws, its idealisations. He was the enemy of Betelgeuse – or more importantly, the enemy of the Outskirts.

And yet, for whatever reason, Amaranth couldn’t be bothered to feel anything. No anger, no hatred, no love, no affection. Xan might as well not have existed. He was an insect crawling in the walls.

That is, until he did the unexpected. Then he became something like millipede crawling where it shouldn’t be crawling. Amaranth turned and shirked his sacrifice’s grip off. Blandly, grey eyes stared up at a pair similar to but more obvious than his own. “Walk’n, not runnin’.” One blink later, and the younger’un turned his head away a smidgen. “Fine now. Lates.” The other was dismissed with a wave.

Xan wondered what he thought in that short teenager brain of his. Things had changed since the last time, four years could do a lot for a person. Ranth had not lost his ears or tail - but there was a presence about him that had changed. One that he wasn't sure what to put his finger on.

The one thing he would not stand was watching the other just walk away as if it was nothing. Sure Xander would admit that he hadn't been the best sacrifice nor had ranth been the best fighter. He had warned him several times of the enforcers and then had to watch as his eye was taken from the skirmish.

Even as his hand reaches for him it was quickly dislodged but it did not sway the older. He was fully ready to grab once again if the smaller tried to leave. A small twitch came when he was a smart ass about walking not running. That was not what he meant and the smaller knew it.

"You haven't changed at all." it was obvious the anger in his voice was changing as he became more frustrated with the situation. How much lack of power he actually had over it, and how much he wanted to change that.

"Amaranth." his full name - the way he said it was almost like a warning, something Xan knew he wouldn't like. "You've been hiding in the outskirts haven't you?" this one was more of a question. He had figured as much yet he didn't expect an answer either.

All ranth would do was fight - he always had - which meant both of them would only continue to fight more.

Slow-blink. Once, twice, thrice. Unphased by his elder’s words, Amaranth simply listened. The intonations in Xan’s voice went through one ear and out the other. The deliberate use of his full name also went on deaf ears. The question asked nearly joined the basket of others, but instead Amaranth simply blinked. Once, twice, three times.

He could have pointed below – to the underground. It was the first thing that came to mind to deviate Xan off the “right” path; however, that wouldn’t be very shrewd to do either. He could point up to the sky, masking some “hidden hint,” but if Xan were to realise… that would also prove unwise. Then, of course, there was here. This choice was also unwise because Xan had the power to search every nook and cranny with his lap hounds’ help.

Ranth chose silence. He stood still, unwavering but casually, and blinked once, twice, three times for thrice.

His reactions... they all only served to unnerve him more. Every second back with him reminded him why they had never gotten along. The smaller had always gotten on his nerves - the way he acted and responded to things. Xan found himself ... only becoming more angry.

Not one sentence - the blank stare he received made his fist clench at his side. So many things he wanted to do to show how angry he was. Maybe a good sense knocking would do the smaller good - to even try to comprehend how he felt. How much he wanted to choke the other or punch him, drag him back inside.

How much power he took away from him with the way he acted. Yet none of them he did - not only because he had a position to hold and also because he knew none of it would do any good. It hadn't before - and it wouldn't now.

"Bulwark - how annoying." he said more to himself than the other. " You have no intention of ever listening to me do you?" this time blue eyes looked somewhere else.

Despite his answer the elder continued his words regardless of whether he spoke or not. "If you leave - don't come back. You have made it very clear you dont need me, and I don't have time to play cat and mouse with you."

“You have no intention of ever listening to me do you?” To this, Amaranth responded simply and truthfully: “no.” Yet, as soon as that plain word emerged into the air and that blue eye swept away, the roots of regret spread deeper into the soil of his skin and ribs. It wasn’t a whole truth. The question couldn’t be answered so simply. Curiosity and wonder had been wreaking havoc in this one’s mind a long time now.

Why? He already knew they were compatible. Their beliefs were greatly different, and Amaranth would never be anything but a dog to tame and train.

There was a different between need and want. Xan said Amaranth didn’t need him, but to be at full strength, that wasn’t true. However, there was a matter of whether full strength was important, important enough to sacrifice oneself to another’s ideals. There was also the wonder if there was an emotional or psychological need, or if it was purely want. Did kismets need to be together? Could they survive without each other?

Xan survived without Ranth for decades, so – as the youth look down at the ground – he surmised that it was, in fact, simply a want. Potentially.

Then his friends came to mind. A young man with snow leopard ears in specific. He and his fighter also didn’t get along and it was actually kind of a relief to Ranth. At the same time, it made one wonder: why were two people born to be together when they could only stand to be apart. It didn’t make sense. It was exhaustive, a waste of energy, and a waste of potential.

Amaranth looked up. He repeated the same word than Xan had moments ago: “Bulwark. How’re Bulwark?” How was Xan a Bulwark?

my dear don’t unfold me ––

He couldn't help but feel the zing resonate in his body - the words that left his mouth. He regretted them almost the minute he had said them. Did he really never want to see the other again? No. That was a lie, he wanted to see him again and he wanted to be enough for him. The entire time they had been together Ranth had bit against being a fighter - bit against society, and in a way bit him. The enforcers had been following the law, something he was supposed to be, but even he wondered if it was too much to take his fighters eye for the mistakes he had made. A child, that was what Ranth was and in some ways he had never grown up.

Yet the feelings of having your fated gone forever did not sit well in his stomach either. So he still couldn't find the courage to look back into the single hue of the other. Knowing that it was in part his fault for the prosthetic that was in the other's socket where the real one should have been. Maybe that was why he ran, because of all people Xan should have stood up for him - but he hadn't instead agreeing with the law.

His thoughts where brought back however when the other spoke and finally he willed himself to look back again. Yet he couldn't concentrate completely on him, even as the other hadn't been looking either. "Bulwark - a defensive wall. I guess the same way you, you are steadfast on leaving and I am here, unmoving. You don't want to consent to a sacrifice being your law - and I am the law and unmoving. Seems we were right for each other after all, shame it ended up on the wrong side."

Right for each other after all? Ears shifted ever so subtly. They rested back in neutral ground as gears slowly churned.

An unyielding law… one who upholds the law unyieldingly. That was an interesting sentiment. In a way, it almost insinuated that Amaranth opposed the law. Did he oppose the law? Or was this whole fighter versus sacrifice bullshit culture?

No, it wasn’t culture. A fighter couldn’t even get married without a sacrifice’s signature, meanwhile it wasn’t the same for sacrifices. In Astrum, the fighter was subhuman. To Xan – the figurehead of law, Amaranth was subhuman.

But perhaps it was time to grow up and try a second time. Four years separated them, and in that gap perhaps a willingness to change sprouted.

No. Ranth had responsibilities. He had to go back to the outskirts.
He had projects, family, friends – people to take care of, a place to rejuvenate.
He couldn’t just… abandon what he had started.

“Free.” This time, Amaranth did point up to the sky. “Indepen’ent.” He was as free as the stars – the real stars, the ones that speckled across the night sky in gaussian. Free, unformed, wild, and difficult to discern the patterns. Hand lowered. “Equal.” Though by now, Ranth was probably stronger. He fought like a savage and a strategist; he had to make up for his weaknesses.

He then turned around.

The words law spoke seemed to stir something - something inside his fighter and something inside the sacrifice that bore the same name. Part of him stung, stung that he had so quickly given into anger and tore up his arms just to make a statement. Just to say that if his fighter wanted to leave then he didn't need him.. but things were different.. they both were different having been without each other..

Missing.. something was missing.

Xan wasn't sure if he even wanted to admit such faults, especially those that lingered inside him. Faults that in the end would not only seperate them but would bring them on opposite sides completely. Fate - Fate had a funny way of making things hard... and sometimes a little messed up.

The words that came from Ranth's mouth - it made him listen and listen well. Freedom. That was a powerful word in its own right and the way the other used it.. made it even more so. Had he felt captured here? Enslaved? It was a new concept one he admitted to not understanding because this was how things were... they had been for a long time but perhaps that was what he was missing.

The other turned and Xander moved forward a hand not meant in malice as it touched the shoulder of the other. The first time he might have been seeing something different. "Equal.." the words where whispered almost before he leaned down and just for the slightest hint placed a kiss upon his head before removing himself all together.

"Goodbye... " he wasn't sure what he was saying goodbye to- he didn't have to know other than his chest ached and that missing feeling came again. This time it was he who turned - he wouldn't stay- even if he asked him to. Forcing him was the wrong idea and if he wanted to chase freedom it wasn't here.

If the nickname tortoise was ever real, it was now. Upon feeling something on the crown of his head, Amaranth’s neck shrunk into hunching shoulders as ears laid flat. Fur fluffed out a percentage more.

Disturbed.

Or, at least, that’s what he wanted to feel. Instead, a black-haired man came to mind. Good-bye. It felt definitive. It felt like closure.

But it was more like the splitting of an old scar.
